Day 3 - Travelling from Manchester to York

Today we checked out of our hostel in Manchester at about 10 am. Then we took the bus to The National Coal Museum. It took about 45 minutes. - At the museum we were divided in to three groups of 12 people. We went inside, and inside the museum we got a guide named Keith. He showed us over to a little house, where another man gave us some equipment. We should wear a helmet and a flashlight before we went down the coal mine. We went down through a kind of elevator, which usually would take 40 seconds, but in our case it took 2 minutes. There was about 140 meters down. When we came down to the coal mine, the guide, who actually has been a coal miner himself for 58 years, guided us around. He told us about the workers conditions and their normal workday back then. Both children and adults were working at the mines. Some children would even begin at the age of 5, and would work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. So it was a very hard work for both the children and the adults. The halls in the mine were very small and claustrophobic. Some of them had to crawl about 10 meters on their knees in the dark were there was no space at all. The coal mine was a very exciting experience, and I think it was the most interesting thing we had seen so far.

After the coal mine we took the bus to York. The bus took like 40-60 minutes, and then we were at the YHA hostel in York. At the hostel we got a room for 6 people. - After that we should walk into the centre of the city to get some lunch. The walk into the city was very beautiful, and it was a lovely weather. That day the clock was about 4 pm before we got lunch, so that was really late and we were very hungry. We ate in the sweetest little café, in one of the small streets near The Minster in York. At the café we got some delicious sandwiches. We are going to write some more about the café "Brew & Brownie" later on. After lunch we walked to The York Minster, where Laura and Trine should tell a little about the cathedral. Afterwards we walked around in the City with our teacher and the other students.

When we got some spare time we went out for shopping. We only shopped in a few of the shops because they closed at 6 pm. - But even though we didn't get a lot of time, we still found some nice stuff. On our way home we went to the supermarket, where we bought some fruit and something to drink. We got a cap, and went home to the hostel to eat our fruit and snacks.

That evening we stayed at the hostel with our classmates.
This is some pictures from the walk from the hostel into York centrum.
