Humans of York

Humans of Manchester

The second interview was with a really kind elderly man. He had the day off, so we bumped into him in Starbucks where he was drinking an ice coffee and reading the newspaper. He was happy to answer our questions:

What is your favourite restaurant in Manchester?
"Evuna, just down Deans Gate on the other side. It's SO delicuous!".

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time in Manchester?
"Spending time with family I think, more becuase we have family all over the world. Some in Japan, some in Caribien, some in Shanghai. The family I've here am I grateful for. That's why I spend a lot of time with them. When I'm by myself I'm just having a lazy time."

Why do you live in Manchester?
"I enjoy the city. We used to live in Altrincham for 15-16 years ago. Altrincham is just about 10 miles away from Manchester. When we liked there I used to visit Manchester regularly, I always loved the city! Then we looked around in Manchester for a new place to live and then we moved here. We really fell in love with our house. Now we like the city which is why we live here."

What do you think is the best thing about Manchester?
"The people. The people are friendly and it's a good mixed community, there is different ethnics groups, people get on and yeah, it's good. Here live old people like me and much younger people who are studying. It's a great mix!"

What education does you have/working on?

What do you think is the most attractive tourist attraction?
" If you come here you should take a look at Old Trafford, it's one of the things that brings people in. Humans of Manchester

During our stay in the UK, we interviewed a couple of people. A couple of weeks before leaving, we made some questions about living in the particular city we visited. It was a really great experience to branch out to the citizens and hear their answers, even though it was a bit challenging and different.
Here is the first interview:

What is your favourite restaurant in Manchester?
"
"My favorite restaurant is San Carlo. It's an italian restaurant just around the corner from here (Starbucks)"

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time in Manchester?

"Watch football! I'm a huge fan."

Why do you live in Manchester, and not any other city?

"
I live in Manchester, of course because i like it here. It's quiet, and the people are really nice here."

What do you do in your spare time?

"
My favorite thing to do in my spare time? Well, I like to watch football with my friends, as I said before."

What do you think is the best thing about Manchester?
"
The best thing about Manchester is the people. Allmost everyone are so nice and respectful."

What possibilities do this city give you/your family?

"There are a lot of possibilities for me, if I wanted them. But since I have a job, I don't really need the possibilities - but it's nice to know, that they are here if I need them. I live on my own here in Manchester. I don't have my family with me!"

Do you have a job? If yes, what do you work with?
"
I work at the Manchester Evening News."

If you didn't live in Manchester, where do you think you would live?
"If I didn't live in Manchester, I think i'd live in London because it's so big."

Do you like this city?
"Absoloutely!"

What is the most important and interesting thing about this city?
"
Again, I have to say the people. It really makes all the difference about the city."

How is it to be young in this city?
"
Too easy - they are not as grateful as they should be, and I believe that they are wasting their time. There are SO many possibilities for a great education and good job, but the young people take that for granted."

Are there many opportunities for the young students here?

"I don't think the young people in Manchester realize how many options and possibilities there are just in the palm of their hand. All the options and possibilities are right here, but instead of turning to the right passage, going forward and wanting to be successful, they get drunk and smoke weed everyday. It's really sad, I think."
